Urban Area Water Conservation

Janhit Foundation is also working with the community to adopt rooftop rainwater harvesting in urban areas. Rapid urbanization and growing population has meant that the availability of water resources is not able to keep pace with the increase in demand for water by people living in cities. Over-utilisation of groundwater resources is leading to a continuing decline in groundwater levels. Alternative sources of water need to be found in order to avert an urban water resources crisis. To raise awareness and promote action, schools, clubs and other institutions have been targeted for educational activities. The purpose is to make the residents of Meerut aware of the present water crisis in the city and also about the threat which the region may face in near future in the context of water availability. To demonstrate rooftop rainwater harvesting technique a model has been established at the Mahila Thana (Women Police station) building to draw the attention of the people as it is situated in the heart of the city. Janhit Foundation is in the process of setting up various rooftop rainwater harvesting structures in other cities also. Regular monitoring of the groundwater table in the pre and post monsoon period is also a regular feature of this campaign. Janhit Foundation focuses on community participation in it's actions to solve the urban water resource crisis.

A model of Rooftop rainwater harvesting structure has also been set up at S.D.Public School, Muzaffarnagar in Western U.P. Eversince Janhit Foundation created an awareness amongst the community to adopt rooftop rainwater harvesting, some 40 buildings in the city have come up with the technique
