Rural Area Water Conservation

Janhit Foundation has been working towards the conservation of water by traditional methods through community participation. It has undertaken a program to revive and promote existing and often historical, rural water resources structures such as ponds, wells and johads. Janhit Foundation strongly believes that water conservation can solve the drinking water shortage crisis, help to prevent further groundwater depletion and promote aquatic ecology through the provision of additional surface water bodies.
Such measures can only be truly effective with the participation of the local community. Janhit Foundation visits many villages within Meerut District on a regular basis to promote continued conservation of water resources and remind the people of the historical cultural heritage that is reflected in the age-old natural water structures.

Structures included within the water resource restoration program include the Gandhari pond in Meerut District. Community participation ensured that the Gandhari pond was restored and revived using the Shramdan (manual labour) offered by the local people. The local people where then advised not to infill or otherwise encroach on the natural water structures. A dead well was also revived. Other natural water resources at Kalyanpur and Alamgirpur villages, Rohta block in Meerut District have also been recharged and revived, to name a few.
