Rainwater Harvesting and provision of safe drinking water to Jalalpur residents in Meerut

Janhit Foundation has recently shared the responsibility of providing safe drinking water and teaching the villagers of Jalalpur village about the importance of rainwater harvesting. This village dominated by Dalits and marginalized community is geographically located on the banks of highly polluted Kali River (East). The Central Ground Water Board (Govt. of India) in its study has confirmed the presence of heavy metals, hundreds and thousands of times more than the permissible limit in the river water and the groundwater around Jalalpur village.

The innocent community is suffering from various ailments due to highly contaminated drinking water since handpumps are the only source of drinking water. The village urgently needs deeper boring of the handpumps which need to be installed in large numbers. Sharing this responsibility, Janhit Foundation in consultation with the rural community of Jalalpur village has installed 8 handpumps at safer groundwater level. It has also established a rainwater harvesting structure in a government school building namely, Jalalpur Junior High School located in the village. This way the villagers would learn the importance of harvesting rain water and would see a difference in the quality of water drawn from the handpumps after few months.

A 'Paani Panchayat' has also been organised by Janhit Foundation sensitizing the community about the emerging water crisis. Strengthening the people's participation, Janhit Foundation has formed a water users committee in Jalalpur which would see the maintenance of the handpumps and the rainwater harvesting structure of the village.
