Land degradation in Meerut district: reversing the crisis through organic fertilizers

This project undertaken in 2004 was for the conversion of hundred villages to the use of organic manure in the agriculture fields. The purpose of the project was to save the soil fertility which otherwise was deteriorating due to excessive use of chemicals in the form of fertilizers and pesticides. This project also providesd livelihood opportunities to farmers who are largely economically marginalized groups. The farmers were trained to produce organic compost from manure and earthworms reducing costly need to buy in chemical fertilisers. Excess compost and earthworms was then sold as an additional source of income. The greatest achievement of the project was that the majority of the farmers have witnessed a rise in their economic standards. The project was conducted in Parkishitgarh, Jani, Kharkhauda, Meerut and Saroorpur blocks under Meerut district.

As an outcome of the project an increasing number of farmers contacted the organisation. The activities during the project have helped in building a confidence amongst the farmers that through preparing organic manure they can improve their livelihood opportunities. Preparing organic manure by them and by saving the micro-organism of their organic fields a people's movements has already taken shape in the region.
