Innovation of LADEP (Lalit - Devpal's Technology) - A rich manure with zero budget
One constraint, which although not fully accepted yet talked about, is that organic farming needs a huge biomass which is generally not available. As such, the agricultural scientists do not come forward to work hard towards the promotion of organic farming. The farming community of Western UP, unknowingly and ignorantly, finds it hard to dispose off the huge biomass of Sugarcane leaves which they take as "simple waste". They burn the valuable biomass. As such, it creates many problems. Soil degradation takes place in the fields where these leaves are put to fire, micro-organisms die in the fields and results into extensive air pollution. Since decades, nobody has ever considered the utility of Sugarcane leaves being beneficial in organic farming.
Over the period, Janhit Foundation has felt that why not avail the benefits of such a huge bio-mass by converting it to a valuable compost based on small researches. The two field officers of Janhit Foundation namely Lalit and Devpal have innovated LADEP (Lalit and Devpal's Technology) towards preparing a rich manure with zero budget. All that is required, say for an acre of land is:
- Sugarcane leaves of one acre Sugarcane field - Appx. 3 tons.
- 2 Tons of Animal dung.
- 2 Tons of field soil.
- 20000 litres of water.
- Green Weeds/Biomass - 1 Ton.
- Rock Phosphate/Ash - 60 Kg.
- Wooden Sticks (Broken) - 2 Quintals
The area of the LADEP should be 25 ft X 8 ft X 5 ft. The manure (Appx. 4-5 tons) is ready for its use in the agriculture field within 5-6 months, depending on the season. It is a very valuable organic manure. These days Janhit Foundation is in the process of contacting the agriculture scientists to verify its scientific balance in the laboratory. Let us stop burning Sugarcane leaves. They are very valuable and can save a lot of budget on farming.
Promotion of Agnihotra amongst the farming community of the region
The organization has also introduced Agnihotra, an ancient system of Yagna (Homa), with a simple procedure through which we can improve our physical, mental and environmental condition. Agnihotra or Homa Therapy is a simple procedure through which we can improve our physical, mental and environmental condition. What technology has done and persists in doing is nothing short of exhausting the land and the air we breathe of all nutrients by destroying plant life with pesticides and insecticides and polluting human beings with chemical fertilizers and food additives. All this is taking its toll now. Man cannot survive this era without a massive attempt to counteract the destruction.
We have nearly reached a stage when there will be no reliable uncontaminated natural resources. We should understand that these times have already begun. We must rely upon scientific means to undo the effects of polluted conditions in the atmosphere, soil, water and on all life forms. The scientists and the governments know this. However, man's awareness is blanketed by myths of prosperity, selfish attitude and by his ignorance towards his environment. The age of complacency is coming to a violent end and hence the need for Agnihotra or Homa Therapy.
Janhit Foundation has been promoting Agnihotra since last two years and has also made arrangements for providing Agnihotra kits to people at large so that they can benefit from it. The farming community and also the common people have now realized the importance of it. Ever since Janhit has taken up popularizing Agnihotra amongst the people, there is an increase in the number of people accepting and practicing it.
Member of People’s Collective for Economic and Social Rights, India
The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights held its 40th Session in Geneva (Palais Wilson) from 28th April 2008 to 16th May 2008. Foodfirst Information and Action Network (FIAN, International) who have a consultative status with UN ECOSOC had invited various delegates from different countries to attend. Janhit Foundation had worked closely with FIAN who were aware of the contributions we had made in the field of organic farming and water conservation and had invited Mr. Anil Rana to attend and represent the foundation and India.
In particular he was invited to be a part of People’s Collective for Economic and Social Rights in India addressing the problems and issues of the Indian scenario during the session on 7th May 2008. This collective was also to conduct an official review of the Periodic Report submitted by the Government of India. The Collective discussed the following issues in great detail:
- The principles of equality and non-discrimination
- Maximum available resources
- Right to food
- Right to livelihood
- Right to social security
- Women’s unpaid work
- Lack of monitoring, accountability and state perpetuated violence
Janhit Foundation presented the case study of Jaibheem Nagar which got high accolades at the summit and along with the story of the Malsingwala “The Village for sale in Punjab” both of which found place in the ‘Right to Food’- Report India published by FIAN, International.
