hospital waste

Meerut has a sizable number of hospitals, nursing homes, pathological labs, clinics and blood banks. Although legislation to control the disposal of bio-medical wastes came into existence in 1998, so far no management of bio-medical waste whatsoever is seen here.

A PIL on hospital waste management has been filed by Janhit Foundation with the Allahabad High Court in May 2004. The Hon'ble High Court has issued notices to top officials of Union and the State Government to give their respective replies to the court. The PIL requests the court to see that disposal of hospital waste such as syringes, blades and bottles is made as per the bio-medical wastes rules of the Government of India. Lack of hospital waste management has not only polluted the environment, but has also seen an increase in the number of patients suffering from deadly diseases like Hepatitis and HIV. The petition emphasizes that Janhit Foundation has frequently alerted the authorities about the threat caused due to poor bio-medical waste management. Unfortunately, due to the callous attitude of the authorities, action has stil not been taken to remedy this dangerous situation.
