Give As you Earn

Janhit Foundation is a partner in Give as You Earn, CAF India’s payroll giving programme which offers companies and their employees an easy and tax-effective way of giving to the cause and NGO of their choice through payroll. As a part of this innovative programme, we have undertaken a number of activities for various target groups.

Vocational Training at Bal Sadan

The foundation organised a vocational training to teach computing skills to the children of Bal Sadan, a 'Government Observation Home' in Meerut. About 30 students were given training for three months to learn the basics of computers alongwith Word, Excel and Paint Brush. Mr. Ghulam Mohd., a volunteer with Janhit Foundation taught the children how to use computers.

The teaching of these basic concepts instilled confidence in these deprived children of the society and gradually they can become computer savvy as computer literacy is the need for the day. In this process the foundation provided one computer also to make the learning process all the more convenient and the deadline to be achieved. Providing the skill of earning will take these students to a future where a livable life could be thought of.

Quiz Competition to ‘Facilitate and Encourage Education amongst the Marginalized Children’

Education is a fundamental right of a child. But education should not be equated with schooling. Formal schooling is, undoubtedly, an indispensable part of a child’s education. But the process of education is a life-long affair, as opposed to schooling. In addition, it is more comprehensive. Education not only builds human personality but also plays pivotal role in shaping attitudes, refining innate talent, enhancing awareness and developing comprehension.

It is disheartening to see that a large number of the marginalized children in Meerut still do not have any access to education. It is indeed unfortunate that a large number of the marginalized children in Meerut are still deprived of a quality education. Touched by their plight, Janhit Foundation decided to take the torch of education to slums. Janhit Foundation strongly believes that the marginalized children must be motivated constantly so that they realize the benefits of education and knowledge. This, on one hand, will increase the number of marginalized children in schools and will reduce the drop-out rates, on the other. Besides, sincere efforts are required to raise the awareness level of these children regardless of whether they have joined school or not.

Realizing this, Janhit Foundation decided to conduct a quiz-competition based on general awareness exclusively for the marginalized children of Meerut. The competition aimed at encouraging such marginalized children who are already going to school; motivating those who have not joined school yet; judging the awareness level of these children, and rewarding the talent and knowledge of these marginalized children.

The quiz-competition was organised on January 25, 2009 in the premises of Janhit Foundation. Sh. Pravin Mishra, SDM Meerut presided over the programme. 61 children participated in the competition. The children were provided with the necessary stationary items. They were required to solve hundred multiple-choice questions in one hour. After the competition got over, they were told the correct answers. Following that, the Janhit team distributed sweets among the children. Thereafter, the Janhit team taught the participants about CHILDLINE (a 24-hours toll-free emergency service run by Janhit Foundation for the children) and Republic Day in detail. Towards the end, the children expressed their innate talent in the form of song, dance and other cultural activities.

To encourage the participants, Janhit Foundation kept three prizes viz. a bicycle, a watch and a school bag for the first, the second and the third winners respectively. Special case was taken in the selection of the nature of prizes. All three prizes are such as required by a school-going child. More importantly, these articles are often unaffordable for a poor child. This drove Janhit Foundation to award these prizes to the talented marginalized children. The first prize was won by Prince Kumar. Prapti Singhal received the second prize. The third prize was taken home by Deepak Rana. The chief guest, Sh. Pravin Mishra awarded the prizes to the winners of the competition.

The very idea of winning a bicycle, a watch and a school bag attracted many slum children who, otherwise dislike studying or going to school. Even parents, who have always been unwilling to send their children to school, came for registering their kids for the competition.

With their spirits high, the slum children worked hard for many days to emerge as a winner. Forgetting everything else, they laid their entire focus on books to prepare well for the quiz-competition.

It is true that only few won the prizes but all the participants looked determined to work harder and make it the next time. The competition proved fruitful as the slum children understood and realized to some extent, the significance and benefits of knowledge. All this depicts that the purpose behind holding the quiz-competition was largely fulfilled.

The quiz-competition has helped Janhit Foundation understand the true status of the awareness among the marginalized children. The Janhit team has observed that the entire programme with scrutiny to make out the strengths, the weaknesses and the requirements of the slum children in the field of education. Subsequently, Janhit Foundation has started working towards materializing its plan to chalk out a curriculum for the slum children to enrich their awareness and provide them a basic non-formal education on a variety of subjects. Janhit Foundation has also planned to counsel such parents who are yet to send their children to school.

Inspired by the huge success of the programme, Janhit Foundation intends to conduct more such programmes in future and serve in the best interests of the marginalized children.

The event being a one of its kind has attracted huge appreciation as well as an encouraging Press and Media coverage. Almost all daily newspapers being circulated within the cit, covered our event on the 25th of January.
