Pesticide residue analysis in water, agriculture, soil and vegetable samples certification

An important study conducted by Janhit Foundation for Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautambudh Nagar, and Muzaffarnagar districts of U.P. has come out with alarming levels of some of the banned pesticides such as Aldrin, Heptachlor epoxide, Fipronil, and Heptachlor in water, agriculture soil and vegetable samples analysed. Some of these pesticides are also listed by the United Nations as Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs), so called because they do not readily breakdown in nature, bioaccumulate through the food chain and within human tissue and are highly acutely toxic to human and animal life. For instance, in one vegetable crop levels of Fipronil was found to be nearly 58 times the normal permissible limit.

As an impact of the study, Janhit Foundation was successful in raising the issue of excessive use of pesticides and Persistent Organic Pollutants to the attention of government officials through print and electronic media. Questions were raised in both the houses of the Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Rarely is an issue considered so important that it is addressed with such urgency by both houses of the parliament.
