Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) namely Lindane and Endosulphan

Sugarcane is extensively grown in this region and dominates the rural landscape. It is the main incoming generating crop for the farming community and there are numerous sugar mills within the local vicinity. The cultivation of sugarcane relies heavily on the use of agro-chemicals, in particular Lindane and Endosulphan which are infamous persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with well documented adverse environmental and human health impacts.

Thus Janhit Foundation initiated this project, supported by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) – UNDP, aiming for the elimination of these two hazardous pesticides and the provision of alternative bio-pesticides, submit a report to the Government policy makers in order to declare them as Persistent Organic Pollutants and thus needs to be banned. The ban Foundation considering all the ill effects attached with the usage of these pesticides, and a sense of social responsibility towards the farming community embarked on a campaign to eliminate them from agricultural usage and move to have them banned within India.

The project started by collecting data which revealed the usage of these particular pesticides within the agricultural industry. This data was used to identify the farmers to be targeted in an area of 8 different blocks in the Meerut and Muzaffarnagar districts. The project also conducted soil sample analysis at the start of project. The Foundation went ahead with consultative meetings with the experts and farmers to create awareness and also to motivate farmers to abandon the use of these harmful pesticides. Simultaneously Self Help Groups were formed in villages to help each other with the activities of the project.

Soon, the organisation would release its study report entitled ‘The Persisting Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) scenario in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh’ which would brief about the issues and present picture of the POPs existing in Uttar Pradesh, focusing on Lindane and Endosulphan, alongwith the National and International scenario’.
